Abstract

The field of autopsy pathology is enjoying an unexpected renaissance as new and improved uses for postmortem examination are found in quality improvement, education, and research. Increased interest in the autopsy is evident in the popular press as well as in national and international physician meetings. This text provides an overview of topics the authors consider crucial to competent and effective autopsy practice in the 21st century. Each chapter combines relevant theoretical background with current and practical experience-based guidance so that pathologists and clinicians can better utilize the autopsy to provide optimal value to families, patients, researchers, hospitals, and health systems. Importantly, pathologist contributors highlight insights and observations on the future of the field in each chapter. The emerging area of rapid research autopsy is also presented from the perspective of both the science and the performance of this new area of autopsy development. Autopsy in the 21st Century provides guidance for readers to embrace transformations that are already taking place in the field of autopsy pathology.

Abstract

This book argues that a serious, scholarly study on exhumation is long overdue. Examining more well-known cases, such as that of Richard III, the Romanovs, and Tutankhamen, alongside the more obscure, Michael Nash explores the motivations beyond exhumation, from retribution to repatriation. Along the way, he explores the influence of Gothic fiction in the eighteenth century, the notoriety of the Ressurection Men in the nineteenth century, and the archeological heyday of the twentieth century.

Abstract

The causes of mortality of lambs in Wallonia are numerous and often multifactorial. They are an interesting field of study for the veterinarian in order to help him to establish his diagnosis effectively but also to enable him to help the breeder in a global context of herd management.
Initially, this work will define the periods at risk, the main pathologies and the risk factors of lamb mortality. Pathologies will be divided into two categories: infectious cause or non-infectious cause. A model for the classification of pathologies by clinical sign will also be proposed.
The case study of 98 autopsied lambs will be found in the second part of this work. The cohort analysis will help to understand the profile of the “found dead lamb” and this model will highlight major pathologies such as gastro-intestinal parasitosis and the malnutrition-cachexia-hypoproteinemia complex.
The end of this work will be devoted to a discussion on possible tracks to allow a reduction of mortality rates in sheep breeding in Wallonia.

Abstract

This book covers topical subjects within the field of death investigation, where changes in practice have recently occurred. The topics embrace the multi-disciplinary approach required for death investigation, and address advances in the field of forensic photography, pathology, and 3D printing as applied to forensics. This volume includes chapters on high altitude deaths, the role of 3D-printing applied to forensic investigations, photogrammetry, commotion cordis (an uncommon cause of fatal cardiac arrest) and the cricoid cartilage. Essentials of Autopsy Practice: Reviews, Updates and Advances is an educational and practical resource aimed at trainees and consultants, generalists and specialists, and multi-disciplinary teams.
